How to Install Quick-Step Herringbone Laminate Flooring
Herringbone laminate flooring has moved from a high-end designer secret to a mainstream specification for wholesalers, contractors, and homeowners who want the parquet look without solid timber cost. Among the most requested SKUs in our export inquiries are grey herringbone laminate flooring, oak herringbone laminate flooring, 12mm herringbone laminate flooring, and waterproof herringbone laminate flooring — all of which follow the same floating-click installation logic as a Quick-Step-style herringbone floor, provided the plank carries an A/B (left/right) profile and a Uniclic-type joint.
This guide is written from a manufacturer’s point of view: it covers how herringbone laminate flooring 12mm, 8mm herringbone laminate flooring, and 10mm herringbone laminate flooring should be handled on site, how the herringbone effect laminate flooring pattern is built from rectangular planks, and where buyers confuse chevron flooring laminate with true herringbone. Use it as a technical handout for your overseas distributors or as a basis for your own “How to Install” landing page.
1. Know the Product Before You Lay It
True herringbone laminate wood flooring uses square-cut rectangular planks. One plank’s short end meets the long side of the next at a 90° stagger, producing the broken zigzag “V” without a continuous point. That is different from chevron laminate flooring, where both plank ends are angle-cut (usually 45°) to meet at a sharp point.
Most Quick-Step-compatible herringbone style laminate flooring ships in equal cartons of:
A planks (left-handed profile)
B planks (right-handed profile)
Whether you sell light oak herringbone laminate, dark oak herringbone laminate flooring, grey oak herringbone laminate flooring, white oak herringbone laminate flooring, walnut herringbone laminate flooring, or black herringbone laminate flooring, the mechanical layout is identical. Colour and decor paper do not change the click sequence.
Thickness matters for prep, not pattern:
| Thickness | Characteristics | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| 8mm herringbone laminate flooring | Lighter, cheaper, needs a flatter subfloor | Budget-friendly / rental projects |
| 10mm herringbone laminate flooring | Balanced residential spec | Standard home installation |
| 12mm herringbone laminate flooring | Best acoustic feel, hides minor subfloor tolerance, premium look | Premium best herringbone laminate flooring lines |
2. Site Conditions & Acclimation
Laminate is a wood-fibre product. Before any grey herringbone laminate, desert oak herringbone laminate, or natural oak herringbone laminate flooring leaves the box:
Store unopened cartons flat in the installation room for 48 hours (24h minimum in warm climates, +24h in winter).
Room temperature 18–22 °C, relative humidity 45–60%.
Do not stack cartons against exterior walls or on fresh screed.
3. Subfloor Rules (Non-Negotiable)
A floating herringbone laminate flooring oak floor is only as good as the base under it.
Concrete: CM moisture < 2.0%, fully cured (approx. 1 week per cm up to 4 cm, plus extra for thicker slabs).
Wooden subfloor: screw down loose boards, sand high spots.
Flatness: ≤ 2 mm deviation per 1 running metre (≤ 3 mm/1 m acceptable for 8 mm goods, tighter for 12 mm).
Clean, dry, no debris.
Roll out laminate underlay with DPM (damp-proof membrane) on concrete. For underfloor heating, use low-tog underlay and confirm the plank is UFH-rated. Never use carpet pad.
4. Find the Centre Line
Unlike straight plank lay, herringbone laminateflooring starts from the middle of the room, not a corner.
Measure room length and width.
Snap a chalk centre line along the main axis (often parallel to the longest wall or toward the main light source).
Dry-lay the first A+B pair on the centre line to form the first “V”.
Check that the V-point sits symmetrical to the door or focal wall.

5. Laying the Herringbone Pattern
Quick-Step-style instructions describe it clearly: click two planks on the long side to form the base, then build left and right arms alternately.
Practical sequence for oak herringbone flooring laminate or grey laminate herringbone flooring:
Place spacer wedges 12–15 mm from the wall (10 mm for 8 mm goods, 15 mm for 12 mm over large areas).
Lay A plank along centre line, B plank clicked to its short end at 90°.
Continue outward: each new plank clicks to the long side of the previous arm, alternating A/B.
Tap gently with laminate block + rubber mallet. Never hammer the joint directly.
Every 3–4 rows, check alignment back to the centre chalk line.
6. Working with Thickness & Colour Variants
12mm herringbone laminate / 12mm laminate herringbone flooring: heavier planks, stronger click feel, better sound. Use 15 mm expansion at perimeter over 8 m runs.
8mm herringbone laminate flooring: flexes more, needs stricter subfloor flatness, cheaper herringbone laminate flooring price point.
Grey herringbone floor laminate / herringbone laminate grey / grey laminate herringbone: mix cartons while laying so tonal variation in light grey oak herringbone laminate or weathered grey herringbone laminate flooring blends naturally.
Desert oak herringbone / volcanic oak herringbone / calais oak herringbone laminate flooring / elegant oak herringbone: rotate decor direction by mixing 3–4 boxes at a time; do not open one box and finish it before opening the next.
White herringbone laminate / white herringbone floor laminate: shows subfloor dust more easily — vacuum twice before laying.
7. Perimeter Cuts, Doors, Pipes
Undercut door jambs with a handsaw using a offcut as height guide; slide plank underneath.
Pipe holes: drill 12–16 mm larger than pipe diameter, cut wedge, glue wedge after click.
Last wall row: measure, leave expansion gap, rip plank lengthwise, pull in with pull bar.
Never fix skirting to the floor. Fix to wall only. Scotia or aluminium profile covers the gap.
8. Cheap Herringbone Laminate Flooring — Without a Cheap Finish
Buyers searching cheap herringbone laminate flooring usually mean low material cost, not low install quality. The pattern exposes bad subfloors faster than straight plank. If you cut corners on levelling, the V-joints open.
Pre-sort A/B cartons in the warehouse
Print a one-page A/B diagram in every box
Bundle matching skirting (60–100 mm) and T-mouldings
Offer 8 mm / 10 mm / 12 mm in the same decor (e.g. grey herringbone laminate, oak robust grey herringbone, silver oak herringbone laminate) so distributors can tier the range
9. Care & Warranty Notes
Damp microfibre mop only. No steam mop. No flooding.
Felt pads on furniture. Soft castors for office chairs.
Warranty on best herringbone laminate flooring lines is void if: no expansion gap, glued down on floating product, installed on wet screed, or mixed with non-matching batch.
